French President Emmanuel Macron dedicated France’s first super carrier to the Free French Forces of World War II, announcing Wednesday that the 80,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will be named FS France Libre (R92). Paris’ next-generation flagship will be the latest in an unbroken chain of domestically designed and built catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) carriers since the 1960s. The French Navy is one of three nations – the other two being the U.S. Navy and China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy – with an active CATOBAR aircraft carrier. France is also the only operator of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers aside from
